Fair Trade: Gender Equality
Could fair trade be the solution for the planet… and gender equality? In any case, this is the promising angle chosen by the YouTube channel UNCTAD Online (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) for this interview with Caroline Torre (Head of Membership and Compliance at the World Fair Trade Organization) and Ténéna Amidou Coulibaly (Program Officer at Fairtrade Africa), moderated by Alexandre Carette of UN Info. The interview took place as part of the “8th of the Month until we’re there” event organized by UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development).
On the agenda: “The secret behind the fair trade business model and the lessons we can learn from it”: While a business model such as fair trade empowers producers and promotes “fairer trading conditions, ” it may also benefit other causes. In fact, it often ensures “greater equality of opportunity, ” as well as a higher proportion of women in leadership roles “compared to traditional business models.”
To explore this topic further, the participants attempt to answer the following questions:
- What is the key to achieving this balanced representation and participation of women and men?
- Can this model be applied to other sectors, particularly the private sector?
