“Not All Men” as seen by Axel Lattuada
At the same time, he runs an excellent Instagram account where we came across the video “What Is ‘Not All Men’?” In it, the socially conscious comedian discusses the online movement that aims to counter #MeToo by reminding people that not all men are abusers.
But at what point have women who speak out against sexist and sexual violence ever blamed ALL men? This is the first point Lattuada returns to. But beyond that, he questions the appropriateness of retorting, “It wasn’t me!” when someone talks about violence they’ve experienced. For example, when someone falls in the street, do we start by saying, “I didn’t push you!”? When you see a doctor because you’re not feeling well, do you ever hear them respond, “It’s not my fault you got sick”? When you confide in a loved one about a breakup, do you hear, “Hey! Wait a minute! I’m not the one who dumped you!”
Where are listening, empathy, and compassion when the first instinct is to frame the problem in terms of oneself in order to better shirk all responsibility?
A humorous invitation to reframe the issue of gender-based and sexual violence by focusing on individuals and recognizing that, in order to engage in collective reflection, we must view discussions about uncomfortable topics as an opportunity to work toward changing society.
