The “Un Une” Parity Network Raises Awareness Among 45 10th-Grade Interns

As part of the 10th-grade internship program, the "Un Une" Parity Network worked with 45 high school students to raise their awareness of gender equality issues.

We know that this is the age when stereotypes persist and take root, particularly with regard to the choice of academic specializations, which subsequently influence the educational and professional paths of young women and men. As a result, girls account for only 25% of students entering engineering and digital technology programs. This proportion has remained stagnant for more than twenty years. Yet these choices put girls at a disadvantage, leading them toward lower-paying careers. And every year, France faces a shortage of more than 20,000 engineers and 60,000 technicians.

Although research shows that children begin to internalize stereotypes as early as age three, these stereotypes continue to develop over the years. For example, by age 10, boys are more likely to see themselves as leaders, while girls internalize limitations regarding their abilities.

Gender stereotypes, unconscious bias, … this meeting began with a presentation on gender equality in the workplace, the Parity Network, its initiatives, and its role within the La Poste Group. On this occasion, Aurore Mayer, director of the Parity Network, explained what gender parity is, why it remains a major issue in the professional world, that it plays out at all levels—starting with education—and that both women and men have a role to play.

The second part took the form of an interactive workshop on stereotypes and key statistics regarding gender equality. True or false: “Boys are better at math” or “In 10 years, we’ll have complete equality between men and women”—and many others. Through lively exchanges, the students were able to respond, debate, and challenge common misconceptions. Some observations surprised them, while others made them think, sparking in-depth discussions.

It was an enriching and dynamic experience that allowed everyone to better understand these topics and their impact on the world of work, and to appreciate their importance for their future choices.
