This Summer in Paris
“We love you, Madam.” Simone Veil 1927–2017
The Saint-Jean Room at City Hall is hosting an ambitious exhibition dedicated to Simone Veil, a beloved politician and pioneer who passed away in 2017.
“We love you, Madame“: Jean d’Ormesson’s laudatory speech to Simone Veil, who had just been elected to the Académie française in 2010, resonates today as a sentiment shared by millions of people.
A politician and a beloved public figure, Simone Veil was a pioneer. As the first female minister of the Fifth Republic in 1974 and the first president of the European Parliament in 1979, she held a unique place in French political life for forty years.
The exhibition pays tribute to this extraordinary life story and showcases numerous documents—some of which have never been seen before—including Simone Veil’s private archives. The exhibition serves as a reminder that before becoming an icon, Simone Jacob, a young woman from Nice, was plunged into the hell of Auschwitz at the age of 16. This trauma laid the foundation for a unique life marked by a constant concern for human dignity.
