The Olympic gold medalists are now in the National Assembly!
The whole world was introduced to 10 French women who made history during the opening ceremony of the Paris Games, where their statues were featured.
The women being honored are:
- Christine de PIZAN, the first woman to make a living as a writer,
- Jeanne BARRET, the first woman to sail around the world,
- Olympe de GOUGES, a pioneer of feminism and author of the Declaration of the Rights of Women and Citizens,
- Louise MICHEL, anarchist and feminist activist,
- Alice GUY, the first female film producer,
- Alice MILLIAT, organizer of the first Women’s World Games,
- Paulette NARDAL, a pioneer of “Black internationalism,”
- Simone de Beauvoir, philosopher,
- Simone VEIL, the first President of the European Parliament,
- Gisèle HALIMI, attorney, co-founder of the “Choisir” movement.
The ten statues are now on display in the main courtyard of the National Assembly. To see them up close, simply book a tour.
