Women in the Digital Sector
There are many in-demand jobs in the digital sector. Yet these jobs are exciting and often well-paid. Although they are often overlooked, they are also strongly gendered in the public imagination.
Yet historically, women have made up the majority of those working in computing and programming. Today, in France, 57% of women play online games (and thus have an interest in digital technology).
“Since we need women in the digital sector, let’s make sure that young girls at least consider making it their career and feel they belong there,” explains Céline Bétourné, who founded a think tank and action group focused on this topic within the CSM SI.
Two events were organized during the first quarter to encourage more young women in the Nantes region to pursue careers in the digital sector.
- On February 15 and 16, several employees served on the panel for Simplon’s mock oral exams for its web developer program. “This experience was a great opportunity to encourage women as they make a career change and to share some of my experience with them.” Mathilde Renaudeau, IT Project Manager.
- Last March (in partnership with the FACE association, as part of its WI Filles program). Five young people had the opportunity to explore our department and interview, on camera, seven professionals (five women and two men) holding positions such as software developer, technical administrator, information systems architect, IT project manager, network supervisor, and head of the cybercrime unit. The idea was to highlight the appeal of these careers, which are also open to women! “It was a wonderful opportunity to connect; I was delighted to share my experience with these young middle school girls,” said Maryse Battais, technical administrator.
“More events will be held throughout the year; we’re always looking for motivated volunteers to share insights into their professions and show that these careers are accessible to everyone.” — Céline Bétourné.
